Van Life — Freedom to Move & Think

The Point Is Freedom

Van life is the practical side: park somewhere quiet, run your own power and water, and read without asking permission.

Core pieces with links:

12V compressor fridge (budget) — Alpicool C20 / CF35 style. Amazon
12V compressor fridge (better) — Iceco or Dometic. Amazon
Portable power — Jackery Explorer 300. Amazon
Water filter — Sawyer Squeeze. Amazon
LiFePO4 battery — Search 100–200Ah for starter systems. Amazon

Mobility + self-contained systems = ability to step outside daily control long enough to think clearly.

Practical overview only. Vehicle electrical work has real safety requirements. Verify current listings and research thoroughly.
Off-Grid Communications — CB & LoRa Mesh

Talk When the Networks Don’t

CB Radio (no license, classic)

Midland 75-822 — Best practical all-rounder. Works as handheld or vehicle radio with the included adapter. 40 channels + NOAA. Amazon
Budget CB — Basic 4W 40-channel handheld. Amazon

Meshtastic / LoRa Mesh (text messaging without cell towers)

LILYGO T-Echo — Compact ready-to-carry node with GPS and e-ink screen. Amazon
Heltec V3 / LoRa32 — Cheapest way to start. Flash Meshtastic firmware. Amazon

CB covers voice with anyone nearby. Mesh covers text with people who also have nodes. Both work when phones don’t.

Radio and mesh devices have legal limits. Check local rules. Range varies with terrain and antenna.
Bushcraft & Primitive Living

One Axe. Whole Cabin.

Bushcraft is the practical art of living simply with hand tools and natural materials. During lockdowns a lot of people rediscovered it: watching someone walk into the woods with an axe and come out with a warm shelter. The point is the same as the rest of the site — life can be much simpler, and you can opt out of a lot of systems with skills and patience.

Creators worth watching:

TA Outdoors (~2.5M subs) — High-volume woodland projects, shelters, longhouses, and practical builds. Clear and consistent. Channel
My Self-Reliance (~2.2M subs) — Shawn James documenting a full hand-built off-grid cabin in the Canadian wilderness. Channel
Fowler’s Makery and Mischief (~1.8M subs) — Zachary Fowler (Alone season 3 winner). Creative survival challenges and inventive builds. Channel
Joe Robinet (~1.5M subs) — Long-form wilderness trips and authentic bushcraft across North America. Channel
Other solid long-form builders — Search MAX BUSHCRAFT, Bushcraft Solo, Old School Bushcraft for extended cabin and dugout projects.

Core skills to start: friction fire, simple lean-to or debris hut, cordage from bark or roots, foraging basics (local plants only), and safe axe/knife use. Tents and tarps still count — the goal is competence, not purity.

Simple Starter Tools (Amazon)

Knife — Morakniv Companion or Bushcraft series. Reliable Scandi grind. Search Amazon
Ferro rod — Pair with any knife spine. Search Amazon
Axe — Small forest axe or hatchet for processing wood. Search “bushcraft axe” or “Gransfors” for options.
Cordage — Paracord or natural fiber. Search Amazon
Wilderness skills have real risks (injury, exposure, misidentification of plants). Learn from multiple sources, practice in safe conditions, and know local laws about camping and foraging.
Earth Medicine — Herbs & Natural Care

Of the Earth — Expanded

Educational overview of common herbs and simple natural approaches. Not medical advice. Always verify plant ID with multiple sources and consult a qualified practitioner, especially if pregnant, on medication, or managing a condition.

Core Everyday Herbs

Chamomile — Mild calmative for stress and sleep. Tea is the most common form.
Ginger — Digestion, nausea, mild inflammation. Fresh tea or capsules.
Turmeric + black pepper — Traditional anti-inflammatory. Better absorbed with fat and piperine.
Garlic — Culinary and traditional immune support. Raw or cooked.
Elderberry — Commonly used as syrup for seasonal support (short-term). Commercial or homemade.
Peppermint — Digestion and mild headaches. Tea or oil (diluted topically; avoid on infants).
Nettle & Dandelion — Nutrient-dense wild greens. Easy to identify in many regions once you learn them.

Starter Video Resources

Feral Foraging — Strong focus on safe plant ID and lookalikes. Channel
The Green Witch — Foraging ethics and wild plant use. Channel
Search playlists: “herbal medicine for beginners,” “safe wild foraging,” “how to make herbal teas and tinctures.”

Practical Starting Points

Begin with culinary herbs you already know (ginger, garlic, mint, rosemary, thyme). Learn one or two local wild plants thoroughly before expanding. Simple preparations: teas, infused honeys, basic salves. Track how you feel. Never self-treat serious conditions.

Educational only. Not a substitute for professional medical care. Herbs can interact with medications, cause allergies, or be unsafe in pregnancy. Misidentified plants can be toxic. Cross-check every identification with field guides and experts.
Off-Grid Places — U.S. Options

Where the Codes Still Leave Room — Expanded

Off-grid feasibility is almost always decided at the county (or town) level, not the state. Look for: little or no zoning on unincorporated land, no adopted residential building code (or a very light one), workable septic or alternative waste rules, and no mandatory utility connection. Water rights and access are the biggest practical limit, especially west of the 100th meridian.

Frequently Discussed Areas

Texas — Many general-law counties cannot zone unincorporated land. Rural acreage is relatively affordable in parts of the state. Water law is mixed; confirm well permits and groundwater districts.
Oklahoma — Similar pattern: rural zoning is often optional. Lower land prices in many counties. Domestic wells are generally straightforward.
Missouri Ozarks — Shannon and Ozark counties are repeatedly cited for no building codes and affordable acreage. Rivers and springs are common; still verify access and quality.
New Mexico (Catron County and others) — Documented areas with no zoning and no building code. Excellent solar potential. Water is the primary constraint (prior appropriation).
Wyoming & northern Idaho — Sparse population, some counties with no statewide building code. Mountain springs and runoff exist, but water rights must be researched carefully.
Appalachia (West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, parts of Tennessee) — Low population density, higher rainfall, and surface water. Land can be inexpensive. Road access and septic rules still matter.

What to Verify Before Buying

  • Zoning status of the specific parcel (unincorporated vs. city limits)
  • Whether a residential building code has been adopted
  • Septic or alternative wastewater rules and soil conditions
  • Well permit process or surface-water rights
  • Road access and seasonal conditions
  • Any HOA, covenants, or subdivision restrictions

Useful starting points: county planning and health department websites, local land-use maps, and recent off-grid buyer reports for that county. Laws change; always confirm current rules with the county itself.

Not legal or real-estate advice. Zoning, building codes, septic rules, and water rights are local and can change. Confirm everything with the specific county before any purchase or build.
Crypto — Bitcoin White Paper & Freedom Arguments

A Modern Freedom Protocol

Bitcoin is often discussed in conspiracy-adjacent spaces because it proposes a money system outside central banks and governments. The original paper is short, technical, and public.

Bitcoin White Paper (2008)
“Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” by Satoshi Nakamoto.
Official PDF (bitcoin.org) · Readable archive

Core idea in the paper: digital cash that works peer-to-peer without a trusted third party, using proof-of-work and a public ledger.

Libertarian / freedom arguments commonly made:

  • Hard money with fixed supply (21 million) vs. inflationary fiat
  • Censorship-resistant transfer of value across borders
  • Opt-out from banking systems and capital controls
  • Self-custody — “not your keys, not your coins”

Status on this site: documented technology + political philosophy. The white paper is primary source material. Whether the freedom claims hold in practice is an open debate.

Educational overview only. Crypto involves volatility, technical risk, and regulatory uncertainty. This is not financial advice. Always verify sources and use official channels.
